Disabilities and Reasonable Adjustments

Learning Disabilities

A learning disability affects the way a person learns, understands and does things throughout their life. Learning disabilities are different for everyone. No two people are the same.

Annual Health Checks

People with a learning disability often have worse physical and mental health than other people. This is not right and should change.

Everyone with a learning disability who is over the age of 14 should have an annual health check with their GP.

To learn more about the health checks, please watch this video.

If you are worried about seeing a doctor, or there is anything they can do to make your appointment better, let the doctor or nurse know.

They can make changes to help you. These are called reasonable adjustments.

Reasonable Adjustments

We want to make it as easy for disabled people to use health services as it is for people who are not disabled. This is called making reasonable adjustments.

Reasonable adjustments can include:

  • using pictures, large print or simple words to explain what is happening
  • booker longer appointments, face to face appointments or having someone with you to support you (like a carer or support worker)
  • booking the appointment at the start or end of the day, so that you do not have to be in a busy waiting room

If you need reasonable adjustments to be made, please contact the surgery and let us know. We will do our best to help you use our services.
